Volvo is refreshing the XC40, EX40 and EC40 with updates spanning exterior and interior design, infotainment and active safety technology.

Outside, all three models get a more confident, contemporary look anchored by a redesigned take on Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, along with an upgraded grille and reworked front bumper, hood and front wings.

The XC40 and EX40 also gain new LED rear lights, an upgraded tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper, while the EC40 keeps its distinctive rear styling; the XC40 additionally picks up new 18-, 19- and 20-inch diamond-cut wheel options.

Akhil Krishnan, interim lead for Volvo’s 30 and 40 series, said the combined design, technology and safety upgrades make these the strongest versions of the 40 series yet, and that he expects the models to remain among Volvo’s best-sellers going forward.

A Faster, Smarter Cabin

Inside, a new 11.2-inch touchscreen brings Volvo’s latest software experience with fewer taps needed to reach key functions, and now includes Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant, letting drivers handle trip planning, finding stops and managing messages through natural conversation.

The cabin also adds practical touches like an updated wireless phone charger and smarter storage, built to flex between weekday routines and weekend trips. On the material side, XC40 buyers can now choose Arianne Cardamom leather paired with Brown Ash wood trim for the first time, alongside refined ambient lighting and Black Ash or aluminum decor options.

A More Comprehensive Safety Package

Volvo built the update around an upgraded sensor and software platform, adding new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 additional ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras to give the car a fuller view of its surroundings.

That platform supports real-time collision response, letting the car warn the driver or intervene directly through automatic emergency steering or braking depending on which action best avoids or reduces an impact.

New and upgraded driver support functions include a Door Opening Alert that warns occupants before opening a door into passing traffic or cyclists, an expanded optional Pilot Assist with lane change support and smoother road-following for long drives, and an optional 360-degree camera now upgraded to a 3D view for easier parking and low-speed maneuvering.

Range and Rollout

For buyers going fully electric, the EX40 offers up to 575km of range and the EC40 up to 584km on a single charge, with both continuing to gain new features and software through over-the-air updates after purchase.

Order books for the refreshed 40 series, including a Black Edition, are open now in select markets, with production starting later this autumn. Volvo notes that range figures are preliminary WLTP estimates that can vary with real-world conditions, and that feature availability, including Google Gemini access, may differ by market and require setup.
