Volkswagen’s all-electric ID. Polo has taken first place in the Budget category at the German Car of the Year (GCOTY) awards, beating out seven competitors including the Renault Twingo and Renault Clio.

The international jury awarded the ID. Polo top marks in four of the five evaluation categories, a result Volkswagen is framing as proof that electric mobility can work in the heart of the small-car segment — affordable, practical and genuinely appealing for everyday use. Kai Grünitz, the Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Brand Group Core board member responsible for development, said the win shows the ID. Polo’s overall package — clear design, generous space, intuitive controls, strong safety standards and technology normally found in higher segments — is genuinely convincing, and framed the result as validation of VW’s broader push to make electric cars accessible to far more customers.

Strong Scores Across the Board

The ID. Polo posted its highest marks in Design and Driving Pleasure at 85.8% of the maximum score, followed by 84.2% in Safety and Environment, 83.8% in Significance and Innovation, and 82.0% in Comfort and Practicality.

Jens Meiners, co-founder of GCOTY, said the ID. Polo beat its closest competitor in four of the five criteria, calling it a decisive class win that reflects how significant the car is for Volkswagen as a brand.

Beyond the Budget category, the ID. Polo also placed among the field’s top performers in GCOTY’s cross-category design rankings, finishing second overall for the Special Award for Best Interior Design and third for Best Exterior Design, based on evaluations from the awards’ 47 jurors.

A New Chapter for a 20-Million-Unit Nameplate

The GCOTY recognition underscores just how significant the ID. Polo is for Volkswagen, arriving as a fully electric reinterpretation of one of the company’s most successful nameplates — more than 20 million Polos have been sold to date.

Developed in Wolfsburg, the ID. Polo pairs a clean, timeless design with efficient front-wheel drive, generous interior space, strong build quality and a range of new features, with pricing starting at €24,995.
