Volkswagen has begun pre-sales in Germany of a new full hybrid drivetrain for the Golf and T-Roc, with the first version offering 125 kW (170 PS) and frequent fully electric driving in everyday use — all without any need for external charging.
The move expands Volkswagen’s lineup for customers seeking lower consumption, reduced CO2 emissions and strong comfort without giving up driving enjoyment. Prices start at 41,400 euros for the Golf Hybrid in R-Line trim, with the T-Roc Style hybrid available from 44,470 euros.
Unlike plug-in hybrids, these new models don’t rely on a charging cable, socket or charging infrastructure at all. Instead, energy for the electric driving phases is generated on board through recuperation and a turbocharged petrol engine working with a generator.
A 1.6 kWh (gross) high-voltage battery, typical for full hybrids, sits in the vehicle floor at the rear of both models to store that energy. Three operating modes coordinate the turbocharged 1.5 TSI evo2 engine with two electric drive motors and the battery, delivering a combined system output of 125 kW alongside a balance of efficiency, dynamics and comfort.
Efficient in the City, Electric in Everyday Driving
The full hybrid system shines in urban traffic and on country roads, where the electric motor can replace or support the petrol engine — particularly when pulling away or driving at low speeds. This allows both models to run frequently on electric power alone, quietly and with plenty of available power.
Compared with mild hybrid versions, the added electric assistance helps cut fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and fuel costs. For the Golf specifically, that translates to fuel savings and a 10 to 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared with a comparable Golf 1.5 eTSI at 110 kW (combined WLTP value), with the efficiency advantage climbing to as much as 35 percent in city driving. System power reaches 125 kW (170 PS) with 309 Nm of torque, letting the Golf Hybrid accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
Three Operating Modes, Automatically Selected
The new drivetrain switches automatically between three operating modes depending on how the car is being driven. At low speeds, the electric motor alone provides propulsion while the TSI engine stays switched off.
In serial drive mode, the electric motor still handles propulsion while the TSI runs decoupled, generating electricity through a generator to extend electric range. In parallel drive mode — active from around 60 km/h on country roads and motorways — the TSI becomes the primary drive system, with the electric motor providing a power boost during acceleration.
Three Driving Profiles for Different Priorities
Drivers can choose between Eco, Comfort and Sport profiles. Eco caps system output at 70 percent and disables the boost function to conserve energy.
Comfort removes that output limit and allows boosting. Sport delivers a sportier feel by switching to serial mode earlier, making full power available more quickly.
Filling a Gap in Volkswagen’s Lineup
With the launch of the 125 kW full hybrid, Volkswagen is expanding its offerings in the high-volume compact and SUV segments, with a further performance level of the technology expected to join the range soon.
The new system is marked with a “Hybrid” badge on the rear of each model, positioning it between the existing mild hybrid “eTSI” models and Volkswagen’s plug-in hybrids, which are available for the Golf as “eHybrid” or the sportier Golf GTE.
