The PEUGEOT 205 GTi set the template every GTi model since has followed, and translating that legacy into the electric era fell to PEUGEOT Design Director Matthias Hossann, who describes the E-208 GTi’s design as fundamentally a question of balance.
“Our philosophy was that we didn’t want to go too far in one particular direction, so it’s a balance between performance and elegance,” Hossann says. “We didn’t want the exterior design to be too overstated or to show off too much. If you love cars, you will look at E-208 GTi and immediately see that it’s a GTi because of its stance. If you’re not an expert, you will still see a beautiful 208.”
That stance comes from a body lowered by 25mm and tracks widened by 56mm at the front and 28mm at the rear. Flared wheel arches accommodate the wider tracks and carry a red line detail lifted straight from the 205 GTi, while a new front spoiler and a gloss black rear diffuser — integrating an LED fog light — round out the more aggressive look.
Heritage Without Going Full Retro
With the GTi badge now over 40 years old, heritage was always going to shape the E-208 GTi’s design — but Hossann is careful to draw a line between honoring the past and getting stuck in it.
“We have more than 200 years of history; heritage is our backbone and we are super respectful of that,” he says. “But PEUGEOT also looks to the future. The reason we’re still here after 200 years of history is that we’re dedicated to producing carefully designed products for the new generation of customers.”
He points to the 2018 PEUGEOT e-LEGEND concept, built to mark the 504 Coupe’s 50th anniversary, as a similar exercise in reworking old shapes and colors for a modern audience. “With E-208 GTi, there was no question of doing a purely retro design,” Hossann says. “But we did want to keep our heritage… we wanted to twist it with innovation and push it into the future.”
The Wheels Reference Two Different 205 GTis
The 18-inch wheels became a particular focal point during development, with Hossann’s team running through multiple iterations before landing on the final design.
“The wheels were inspired by the Speedlines from 205 GTi 1.9, but we designed them in-house and we had both 1.9 and 1.6-litre 205 GTi in mind,” he explains. “The centre curve is like the 1.6 and the exterior shape is more like the 1.9.” Beyond the styling nod, the perforated structure also serves a functional purpose, helping optimize brake cooling.
The color palette leans into the same heritage cues, with seven options — Okénite White, Elixir Red, Miramar Blue, Nera Black, Cumulus Grey, Selenium Grey and Agueda Yellow — several of which reference the original 205 GTi. Red GTi accents appear throughout on the grille, headlights, PEUGEOT emblem, wheel arches, brake calipers and C-pillar badges.
A Red Theme Carried Into the Cabin
Inside, the red motif continues through bright carpets, floor mats and seatbelts, echoing the 205 GTi’s own cabin. The compact steering wheel — a signature PEUGEOT element — combines perforated leather with Alcantara and a red ‘208 GTi’ badge, while Hossann points to a red detail on the rear spoiler, visible in the rear-view mirror, as a small but deliberate reminder that the driver is behind the wheel of a GTi.
The front seats got particular attention to balance sportiness with comfort. “On the seats, we have a finish like we used to have in the 205 GTi with two materials: Alcantara and special red textiles, with a central red line that extends across the seat and backrest,” Hossann says.
A Blueprint for PEUGEOT’s Design Future
For Hossann, the E-208 GTi ultimately reflects a broader mindset guiding PEUGEOT’s design studio going forward. “I think E-208 GTi is a good example of using the right proportion of our heritage but taking it into the future,” he says. “This is the overall mindset that we have in the design studio when we’re working on the next generation of PEUGEOT models.”
