BMW M has celebrated the production of its one-millionth vehicle. The milestone car is a BMW M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III and built at BMW Group Plant Munich.
Plant head Peter Weber presented it to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, during an official ceremony. The company says the achievement marks more than five decades of BMW M, built on performance, innovation and driving pleasure. Van Meel said the milestone shows customers still value the brand’s mix of road and track capability with everyday practicality, 40 years after the first BMW M3 reached the market.
Electric M3 Comes to the Main Plant
Munich will also build the fully electric BMW M3, the first high-performance model to use BMW M Neue Klasse technology. It will be the second Neue Klasse model built in Munich, after the fully electric BMW i3.
Van Meel said BMW M will develop its high-performance portfolio on this technology, including fully electric models. Weber said the plant, which has produced vehicles for more than 100 years, feels a strong emotional connection to the M brand. Production of the current M3 generation began in Munich in 2020.
A Plant Remodelled for Electric Production
From 2027, BMW Group’s main plant in Munich will build only fully electric vehicles. The site was remodelled during ongoing production. Around a third of the plant area now houses a new body shop, a modern vehicle assembly and new logistics zones.
The company says modern production structures, digitalisation and close work with development teams and suppliers will help the electric M3 be built efficiently. BMW is investing around €650 million to convert Plant Munich into a site dedicated to fully electric vehicles.
