Volvo Cars has announced an expanded partnership with NVIDIA to advance safety in automated driving for its future cars. The companies have worked together for a decade, starting in 2017.

Guided by Volvo’s safety expertise and powered by NVIDIA’s Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, the technology is designed to take future Volvo cars from door to door, across highways, busy urban streets and parking situations.

The first application will appear in a next-generation Volvo car, as part of the company’s recently announced largest-ever product push.

Safety Expertise Meets AI Computing

Volvo will combine its vehicle safety systems and engineering with NVIDIA’s AI and accelerated computing, including Hyperion, Halos OS and the Alpamayo Stack driving software. The companies say the work will raise the bar for AI-enabled car safety while making driving easier.

Automated driving will be introduced gradually, moving toward eyes-off and mind-off driving. Volvo brings nearly a century of real-world safety research and a human-centric approach to the project, with the aim of setting a benchmark for automated driving that is safe, convenient and worthy of customer trust.

Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, said the partnership combines two distinct strengths, industry-leading safety knowledge and world-class AI, to create safer and more attractive cars. Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, said accelerated computing has turned the car into an intelligent machine that can understand its surroundings, and that the two companies are combining Volvo’s safety systems with Hyperion and Halos to build a new generation of cars.
