BMW’s Neue Klasse marks the first time the automaker is offering an expanded suite of active safety assistance as standard equipment across multiple model lines, starting with the BMW iX3 and expanding to the i3, X5 and 7 Series.
Among the new additions is an exit warning system with active door-opening delay, aimed at preventing so-called dooring accidents.
Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President of Driving Experience Development, described the rollout as an extension of BMW’s “Smart, Symbiotic, Safe” approach, where assistance systems work quietly alongside the driver and step in decisively only when it matters.
BMW backs the push with fleet data: over the past month, 1.3 million connected vehicles with owner consent covered 1.6 billion kilometers across Europe, during which drivers received roughly 8 million collision warnings and active steering or braking interventions helped avoid a collision in 243,977 separate cases.
A System Built to Know When Not to Intervene
BMW Symbiotic Drive is designed to read driver intent through steering input and line of sight, letting functions like the Lane Keeping Assistant stay silent during deliberate maneuvers — signaled by things like an activated turn signal, an active steering input or a shoulder check — and only warn or intervene when it detects an unintended lane departure or a real collision risk.
The approach appears to be paying off in testing, too: the new iX3 earned a five-star rating in Euro NCAP’s latest evaluation, one of the first vehicles assessed under the organization’s protocols revised in 2026.
Tackling Dooring Accidents Directly
Dooring — when a parked car’s door swings open into oncoming traffic or cyclists — remains a meaningful safety risk; Germany’s insurance association recorded 392 such incidents in Berlin in 2024, accounting for nearly 8% of the city’s bicycle accidents.
BMW’s exit warning system has offered audible and visual alerts for years, but the Neue Klasse adds active door-opening delay, using side radars to continuously monitor the area around a parked car and electronically hold the door lock briefly if it detects an approaching vehicle, cyclist or other road user.
New Interventions for Emergencies
Several other systems debut alongside these updates. A new emergency steering intervention can automatically guide the car around an obstacle while staying in its own lane — useful if a pedestrian steps out between parked cars or a cyclist goes unnoticed in low light — a capability BMW says is currently unique in the market.
A related side-impact version nudges the car away from an encroaching vehicle when there’s enough room to maneuver safely. The Emergency Brake Assistant, now paired with evasive steering support, can apply full braking force to prevent head-on collisions and, with improved sensors, now also helps in situations involving animals crossing the road. Road Priority Warning displays recognized traffic signs — including red lights, yield and stop signs, no-entry signs and now crosswalk warnings — directly in the driver’s view through BMW’s Panoramic Vision display.
An Attentiveness Assistant with emergency stop can detect through the driver-facing camera if someone is no longer fit to drive, bringing the car to a controlled stop, activating hazard lights and triggering an eCall automatically, while still allowing the driver to override the system at any time.
More Protection While Parking and Maneuvering
Parking and low-speed safety also get upgrades. Active Park Distance Control now applies braking at both the rear and, for the first time, the sides of the car when ultrasonic sensors and surround-view cameras detect stationary or moving objects.
A new emergency braking function for cross-traffic uses rear side radars, a rearview camera and a bird’s-eye-view display to help prevent collisions with cyclists or other road users when backing out of a space with limited visibility.
Standard start monitoring can also catch pedal misapplication — if the system detects an obstacle within a meter of the car at speeds up to 2 km/h combined with an unusually forceful, rapid press of the accelerator, it applies the brakes automatically in either direction.
The Computing Power Behind It
All of these functions run through a new central computer BMW calls the “Superbrain of Automated Driving,” a water-cooled system with roughly 20 times the processing power of its predecessor, managing active safety, automated driving and automated parking functions together.
Driver-facing clarity comes from BMW’s updated Assisted View display within Operating System X, shown across the Central Display, Panoramic Vision or an optional 3D head-up display, giving drivers a clearer read on traffic conditions and which assistance systems are currently active.
Where the Systems Get Tested
Much of this development has run through BMW’s Future Mobility Development Center in Sokolov, Czech Republic, which opened in 2023. Dr. Martin Sautter, Senior Vice President of Vehicle Certification, said the roughly 600-hectare site — BMW‘s largest proving ground worldwide, with about 25 kilometers of test track — functions as a core part of the company’s development strategy rather than a simple test track, allowing engineers to recreate demanding, reproducible real-world scenarios spanning urban traffic, motorway driving and automated parking.
That facility works alongside virtual simulation and millions of kilometers of public-road testing in extreme heat, snow and ice across Europe, North America, South Africa and China.
