At the AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition, GM Defense LLC, a General Motors subsidiary, showed how it is moving commercial innovation into tactical military use.
The company says its “customer-first, technology-transferred” approach brings GM‘s engineering, supply chain and manufacturing scale to the service member. President Steve duMont said the company starts from existing technology rather than a blank sheet, turning customer needs into mission-ready capability faster.
Infantry Squad Vehicle Growth
The U.S. Army’s planned requirement for the Infantry Squad Vehicle has grown from an initial order of about 649 vehicles to nearly 12,000. GM Defense identified an operational gap with the customer and self-funded development of the Infantry Squad Vehicle Utility (ISV-U) prototype.
It delivered seven early prototypes to unit-level assessments at no cost to the Army. The result is a versatile five-soldier variant, which is slated to field across 39 active-duty and National Guard mobile brigades.
Faster Missile Defense Supply
GM Defense delivered the first batch of PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement housing components to Lockheed Martin on August 28, 22 days after the contract was signed on August 6. The company says the timeline shows its casting and precision-fabrication capabilities can quickly scale critical air and missile defense production.
Autonomous, Hybrid and Allied Programmes
GM Defense unveiled an Unmanned Ground Vehicle concept built on a rugged Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD dual-rear-wheel skateboard architecture, designed for silent logistics and casualty evacuation. Functional trials are targeted for 2027. The company also showed the EPIQ Hybrid prototype, an expeditionary energy storage system rated at 60 kilowatts and 100 kilowatt-hours, paired with an onboard generator to reduce heat and noise in austere environments.
GM Defence UK is advancing a Light Mobility Vehicle proposal through Team LionStrike, a consortium with NP Aerospace and BAE Systems. The company says the team offers low-risk, commercially based solutions at the speed and scale allied forces require.
