Starting in October 2026, BMW Group will roll out BMW Maps with driver assistance for vehicles running BMW Operating System X, merging route guidance, the car’s perception of its surroundings, and active driver-assistance information into a single 3D view on the central display.
Rather than just showing the next turn, the system displays where the car sits precisely within its lane and at the correct road level, which helps on highways, at intersections and in city traffic, while also making it clearer to drivers what assisted or semi-automated systems are actually doing in real time.
Built Around Highway and Eventually Urban Assistance
The feature is designed to pair closely with BMW’s driver-assistance systems, particularly Highway Assistant, which allows hands-free highway driving at speeds up to 130 km/h by managing both longitudinal and lateral movement and handling automated lane changes once the driver confirms with a glance; with BMW Maps active, that support extends continuously from the highway on-ramp to the exit.
BMW plans to extend the same navigation-assistance integration into cities starting in 2027, beginning with navigation-guided, semi-automated urban driving in Germany.
A Joint Effort With Mapbox
Stephan Durach, BMW Group’s Senior Vice President of Digital Services, Infotainment and Connected Company, said intelligent interaction between navigation and driver assistance is a key step toward more highly automated driving, and that the new system — developed with mapping partner Mapbox — gives drivers clearer orientation whenever assistance functions are active.
Mapbox CEO Peter Sirota said the partnership lets Mapbox bring this next-generation navigation experience to market first, letting drivers see exactly which lane they need and everything happening around the vehicle in one unified view. BMW developed the underlying display in-house, building on its newest generation of driver-assistance systems and Operating System X, while drawing on Mapbox’s navigation data and mapping technology — a combination BMW positions as a key differentiator in intelligent vehicle guidance across international markets.
The feature will only be available alongside Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant, and its rollout will vary by country, city and road as it expands in phases.
