Hyundai Motor America reported 86,977 vehicles sold in August, down 2% from the same month last year, though the brand remains up 2% year-to-date at 620,025 units.

The headline story was hybrids, which set a new August sales record, climbing 33% year-over-year to account for 29% of Hyundai’s total monthly volume.

Randy Parker, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, pointed to that hybrid strength in explaining how electrified vehicles overall reached 34% of total sales for the month, framing the results as resilient given a tough comparison against last year’s EV pull-ahead demand and an August that included Labor Day.

Winners and Losers Across the Lineup

The Tucson and Santa Fe both posted their best-ever August sales, up 18% and 5% respectively, while Hyundai’s sedans had an even stronger month — Elantra sales rose 16% and Sonata jumped 44%.

The picture looked very different for Hyundai’s electric lineup: Ioniq 5 sales fell 51%, Ioniq 6 dropped 97% to just 28 units, and Ioniq 9 slipped 42% for the month, even though Ioniq 9 remains up 98% year-to-date. Palisade, Santa Cruz, Kona and Venue all posted year-over-year declines in August as well.

Beyond Monthly Sales

Hyundai also used August to lay out longer-term plans, unveiling a growth roadmap at its 2026 CEO Investor Day targeting 5.55 million global vehicle sales and more than 100 new or refreshed models by 2030, alongside expanded U.S. production and investment in battery and autonomous driving technology.

On the customer side, Hyundai introduced an automatic 10% charging discount for eligible EV owners at IONNA fast-charging stations nationwide, temporarily boosted to 20% through September, while on the racetrack, the No. 33 Hyundai Elantra N TCR extended its podium streak in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge with a second-place finish at VIR.
