Toyota is opening a new chapter in its battery electric vehicle line-up with the bZ4X Touring, a larger and more versatile addition to the successful bZ4X SUV range. Designed for family travel and outdoor lifestyles, it draws on Toyota’s SUV heritage to deliver authentic off-road performance rather than being just another BEV.

The distinctive bZ4X design gains a more rugged edge through redesigned bumpers, skid plates, wheel arch trims, and purposeful black wheels. The Touring’s added length is dedicated to a bigger load compartment, with volume increased by almost 50% compared to the bZ4X, plus robust roof rails and trailer-towing capability for carrying even more.

Space as a Defining Quality

From the C-pillar back, the vehicle’s length has grown by 140 mm over the regular bZ4X, dedicated to luggage, sports kit, camping equipment, or children’s buggies. The boot opening is also wider and taller by 21 and 23 mm respectively. With rear seats in place, 669 litres are available—48% more than the bZ4X and among the largest in its segment—expanding to a maximum 1,718 litres with the 60:40 seats folded flat.

Access is made easy through a larger power-operated tailgate and a rear-seat folding release lever in the load compartment, along with bag hooks, deck hooks, and lights.

Rear-seat passengers enjoy more open headspace thanks to a consistent roof line rather than the rearward slope of the regular model. The roof rails carry up to 80 kg, while towing capacity reaches 1,500 kg in AWD form and 750 kg in FWD.

Rugged BEV Styling

The bZ4X Touring remains instantly recognisable as a Toyota BEV through its signature hammerhead frontal shape, emphasised by lighting and a black styling line along the bonnet’s leading edge. Touring-specific lower bumpers, skid plates front and rear, and grained wheel arch trims project a stronger, more purposeful stance, while a slim rear light bar wraps into the rear wings.

Wheels are 18-inch alloys with resin caps or 20-inch alloys, both in matt black. Six exterior colours suit the adventure profile, notably a new Brilliant Bronze metallic, with black roof rails standard. Inside, the cabin matches the bZ4X, featuring an ultra-slim horizontal instrument panel and, on the High grade, a panoramic roof.

A new City Moss interior colour is exclusive to the Touring. The 14-inch multimedia screen anchors the centre, while the console forms a “digital island” with a dial shift selector and twin wireless chargers.

Powertrain and Charging

Both front and all-wheel drive versions use a 74.7 kWh battery. The FWD model shares the bZ4X system with a front eAxle producing 165 kW/224 DIN hp and 268.6 Nm, enabling 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and up to 591 km range.

The AWD version adds a 167 kW rear eAxle for total output of 280 kW/380 DIN hp—making it Toyota’s most powerful and fastest-accelerating BEV, reaching 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds with up to 528 km range.

Energy consumption is efficient at 14.0 kWh/100 km for the FWD model. A battery pre-conditioning system enables DC 150 kW charging from 10 to 80% in about 28 minutes across a -10 to +20°C range, remaining around 30 minutes even at -20°C. Depending on grade, an 11 kW or 22 kW onboard charger allows AC charging from 10-100% in roughly 7 or 3.5 hours. New silicon carbide semiconductors in the inverter improve efficiency and output.

Battery Guarantee and Driving Dynamics

Toyota’s Battery Care Program guarantees the battery will maintain at least 70% of capacity for up to 10 years or one million kilometres, subject to an annual health check. Paddle shifts on the steering wheel offer four levels of regenerative boost control, compensating for up to about 80% of required deceleration.

Built on Toyota‘s eTNGA modular BEV architecture, the Touring benefits from a rigid body, low centre of gravity, and responsive dynamics. To accommodate the extra length, a rear ring frame with enlarged cross section and a frame supporting the C and D pillars maintain rigidity and suppress vibration. Suspension uses MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear, with braking and steering shared with the established bZ4X.

Off-Road Capability and Safety

The bZ4X Touring carries forward intelligent off-road technology. X-MODE adjusts settings for mud or snow, deep mud and snow below 20 km/h, and tougher conditions using Grip Control below 10 km/h, while Downhill Assist Control manages descents.

The vehicle can wade through water up to 500 mm deep. A Multi-Terrain Monitor and Panoramic View Monitor, standard on AWD, help judge off-road conditions with under-vehicle views, while an enhanced all-wheel drive control system factors in left-right wheel speed differences for greater stability on snow. The FWD model gains a Snow mode for slippery surfaces.

The comprehensive Toyota T-Mate package includes the latest Toyota Safety Sense features, such as the Pre-Collision System with Emergency Steering Assist, Lane Trace Assist, Proactive Driving Assist, Safe Exit Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, and Parking Support Brake. Over-the-air software updates deliver the latest developments without a workshop visit.
