Anyone who has buckled a child into a car seat knows how much the rear door angle matters. On the All-New Tucson, the rear doors open to 83 degrees.
Koo Young-woo and Song Min-yong of Hyundai’s MLV Integrated Testing Team presented the fifth-gen Tucson as a family SUV, not just a compact SUV.
How much bigger is the All-New Tucson?
Compared with the outgoing model, the All-New Tucson is 60mm longer, 40mm wider and 20mm taller, with a wheelbase that is 30mm longer.
Hyundai says this gives it the most space in its class, and most of the gain went to the rear seat. Rear legroom is up 14mm, rear headroom is up 29mm, and shoulder room is up 6mm in both rows. Cargo space grows from 622 to 645 liters on the 1.6 turbo gasoline model.
What new storage and convenience features does it get?
New features include stacked dual wireless chargers, a hidden tray under the armrest, a card holder in the driver-side air vent, and cupholders in the rear door trims.
Cargo-area storage can be set up for camping or leisure with Hyundai’s AddGear accessories.
How did Hyundai improve ride and quietness?
Hyundai stiffened the front strut mounting points, added a rear crossmember stay and fitted new MFS-II shock absorbers. It also extended acoustic glass to the rear side windows.

Front acoustic glass is 1mm thicker, at 5mm. One-piece door glass runs reduce wind noise. The dash insulation pad’s sound-blocking area is about 51% larger.
Underfloor padding now covers the whole area under the seats. The carpet foam density goes from 70K to 85K. A dual-stopper transmission mount, a first for Hyundai, smooths start-up vibration on the gasoline model and engine-motor transitions on the hybrid.
