Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the ID. Tiguan, a mid-size electric SUV that replaces both the ID.4 and the ID.5. It is built in Emden and will go on sale in early 2027 alongside the combustion and hybrid Tiguan made in Wolfsburg.

VW brand CEO Thomas Schäfer pointed to the Tiguan as the company’s global bestseller and the ID.4 and ID.5 as two of its most successful EVs, describing the new model as the point where those two stories meet and as half of one of Europe’s strongest SUV pairings.

Powertrains, Range and Practicality

Three versions are on offer, all on the MEB+ platform. The entry model is rear-wheel drive with 140 kW (190 PS) and a 58 kWh battery. A 210 kW (286 PS) rear-driver and a 220 kW (299 PS) 4MOTION all-wheel-drive model both use a 77 kWh pack.

WLTP range reaches up to 600 km, depending on output and battery. Towing capacity is 1,800 kg with the smaller battery and 2,000 kg with the larger one. Luggage space is up to 534 litres, plus a 32-litre frunk. Trim levels run from Trend and Life to Style and R-Line.

A Sharper Look Inside and Out

The design departs from the softer crossover shape of its predecessors in favour of a more upright, sculpted SUV stance under VW’s Pure Positive language, and the pull-style door handles are back. The cabin is meant to feel a class above, with higher-grade materials and ambient lighting.

The cockpit is built around a 10-inch driver display and a 15-inch central touchscreen. For the first time on a European Volkswagen, a 12-inch front-passenger display sits alongside them. A privacy mode hides its content from the driver, and the passenger can stream sound to Bluetooth headphones.

Buttons Return

Volkswagen has responded to complaints about touch-only controls. Climate functions sit on a physical button bar in the centre console, the multifunction steering wheel has real buttons instead of touch pads, and a controller on the console handles volume and track selection.

The door panel has been reworked, and the front houses two Qi2 wireless chargers with magnetic positioning.

Retro Displays and Tech

A lighter touch is the “Retro” mode, selected from the steering wheel, which recreates the blue-and-red gauges of the Golf IV in the driver display, with the rev counter swapped for a power-flow readout. The infotainment screen offers a virtual garage of six VW models: Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, Tiguan I, Race Touareg and Beetle.

One-pedal driving is standard. The new Connected Travel Assist can change lanes on motorways and bring the car to a stop at red lights. Options include massaging, ventilated and memory front seats, a 480-watt Harman Kardon audio system and a panoramic roof.

A Digital Key lets owners unlock and start the car from a smartphone and share access via the Volkswagen app, while a PowerSocket adapter in the charge port provides vehicle-to-load power for devices from e-bikes to electric grills.
