Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Debuts at Nürburgring 24h Race with €39,000 Starting Price

폭스바겐 ID. 폴로 GTI, 100-per-cent electric, 100-per-cent GTI: Volkswagen presents the all‑new electic ID. Polo GTI

Fifty years after the first GTI debut, Volkswagen presented the first all-electric model with the world-famous badge—the completely newly developed ID. Polo GTI with 166 kW (226 PS) output. It is a powerful and highly agile compact sports car reaching 100 km/h from standstill in 6.8 seconds while remaining suitable for everyday driving.

Like the first GTI in 1976, the new ID. Polo GTI’s drive power transfers to wheels via front axle—a maximum of 290 Newton-meters available at lightning speed. This power is perfectly proportioned thanks to standard electronically controlled front differential lock. The world premiere occurred Friday at the Nürburgring 24h race. Pre-sales are scheduled to start in Germany this autumn at just under €39,000.

GTI Characteristics Reinterpreted for Electric Platform

With clear design, GTI features, and powerful front-wheel drive, the ID. Polo GTI continues the first Golf GTI’s 1976 legacy. These unique hereditary characteristics have been visually and technically reinterpreted.

Beyond the front differential lock, standard technical equipment includes adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering specially developed for the GTI. The ID. Polo GTI’s high output of 166 kW (226 PS) and maximum torque (290 Nm) are generally available at all times to deliver particularly dynamic handling and that unique GTI feeling.

A new GTI driving profile activates via sports steering wheel button. All drive and chassis systems—including electric motor power delivery, standard progressive steering, and adaptive DCC sports chassis—switch to maximum sportiness with single click. The cockpit also changes to specific color and graphics scheme.

52 kWh Battery with Constant DC Charging Curve

The APP290 drive system provides ID. Polo GTI propulsion. This system receives power from the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery with 52 kWh energy content (net). It enables WLTP range up to 424 km and charges at DC stations with up to 105 kW. Thanks to particularly constant charging curve, the battery charges from 10 to 80 percent in about 24 minutes at DC quick-charging stations.

Design Language Follows GTI Heritage

A GTI from Volkswagen embodies clear design—timeless, with balanced proportions and powerful. This was true for the first Golf GTI in 1976 and the first Polo GTI in 2006. The new ID. Polo GTI seamlessly follows this.

In body layout, it follows the new Volkswagen Pure Positive design language, creating a compact sports car with clear and powerful stance atop standard 19-inch alloy wheels. The iconic red stripe is a distinctive front feature, serving as this sporty brand’s hallmark since the first Golf GTI.

On the ID. Polo GTI, the stripe stretches over almost the entire width, with 3D GTI logo incorporated on the left. An LED light strip, illuminated VW badge, and standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights position above this as horizontal bar. The air intake with characteristic GTI honeycomb pattern locates slightly lower. Two red-painted vertical elements incorporate in outer areas, resembling motor sports towing eyes.

The ID. Polo GTI silhouette is powerful and clear, revealing Volkswagen’s most well-known design feature: the C-pillar inspired by the first Golf. As unique feature, the GTI equips with roof spoiler divided in the middle.

The ID. Polo GTI’s light design features standard IQ.LIGHT tail light clusters, each with two outer three-dimensional LED elements. On the GTI, transparent areas between them and the VW logo illuminate in red. The two-part black rear diffuser has muscular appearance.

Interior Features Tartan Check Fabric and Retro Display Option

Red and black dominate the ID. Polo GTI interior. Colors appear in numerous cockpit landscape features, including contrasting red topstitching on the new GTI sports steering wheel and red marking incorporated in the steering wheel rim at 12 o’clock, similar to motor sports marking. Red topstitching appears in doors and on standard premium sport seats (front) and rear seats.

Seat inner surfaces upholster in fabric reinterpreting the legendary tartan check of historic GTI models. The red GTI emblem integrates into integral head restraints on front sports seats and appears illuminated on the multi-function sports steering wheel. Two paddles for adjusting recuperation level are another new steering wheel feature.

The Digital Cockpit measures 26 cm (10.25 inches) diagonally and offers different display views. If the driver uses the View button on the steering wheel to activate retro display, instruments transform into late Golf I style.

The infotainment system touch display measures 32.77 cm (12.9 inches) diagonally. If retro display is active, graphic details in Golf I style display here, including track display for songs shown as cassette—the portable music storage form popular in the 1980s.

Increased Interior Space and Towing Capability

The ID. Polo GTI is a small space miracle thanks to particularly compact drive modules, providing passengers 19 mm more interior space than the Polo GTI with combustion engine (MQB).

Interior width and headroom increased, while luggage compartment volume grew more than 25 percent—from 351 to 441 liters. When rear seat backrests fold down, load capacity increases to 1,240 liters (Polo MQB: 1,125 liters).

The detachable ball coupling offers additional variability: with drawbar load of 75 kg, this easily holds bicycle carrier with two e-bikes. Thanks to towing capacity up to 1.2 tonnes (braked, 12 percent gradient), this small Volkswagen can pull motorbikes on trailer.

Optional equipment includes Harman Kardon sound system with 425 Watts music output and 10 speakers, including center speaker and subwoofer. Also available: large panoramic sunroof.

New for this segment is pneumatic massage function for electrically adjustable 12-way front seats. For drivers preferring particularly dynamic experience, 19-inch premium sports tire (235/40/19), the Bridgestone Potenza Sport specifically developed for ID. Polo GTI, will be available optionally.

Connected Travel Assist with Traffic Light Recognition

Thanks to MEB+ and latest software, the ID. Polo GTI comes with numerous state-of-the-art assist systems as standard. The next generation Travel Assist will be additionally available as optional equipment. Since the system uses online data, it has been renamed ‘Connected Travel Assist’.

The system for assisted lateral and longitudinal guidance can now detect red traffic lights and automatically brake the ID. Polo GTI to standstill within system limits. Another new feature is one-pedal driving for rapid deceleration through accelerator control alone.
